Altrusa is an international volunteer service organization of business and professional leaders, classified by occupation, dedicated to improving their communities by personal service.

Altrusa's presence in the Greater Kansas City metro area is carried on by two distinct entities that work together to carry out Altrusa's vital mission of volunteer community service, especially as literacy advocates.  The oldest, known as the Altrusa Club (officially Altrusa International of Greater Kansas City, Inc), was chartered in 1942 and is a membership organization.   Through their local Altrusa clubs, members unite their varied talents in service to others, achieving as a group what individuals cannot do alone. Altrusa clubs develop and fund specific service projects to meet community needs.  Altrusa is recognized nationally and internationally for the significant contributions of its clubs and members.

The other entity, founded in 1985, is known as the Foundation.  It is a 510(c)(3) organization, officially Altrusa International of Greater Kansas City Foundation, Inc.  and all fundraising activities are conducted through the Foundation.  The Foundation then funds projects presented to it by the Club in the form of its Service Plan, using the proceeds of the Fundraisers at which Club members volunteer.

Each organization has its own Board of Directors, separate finances and operates independently, but has the same mission.   Contributions to the Foundation are deductible in accordance with applicable law.  Contributions to the Club are not deductible as it is a 501(c)(4) organization.
